CAN YOU IMAGINE your street absorbing water instead of water rushing to the stormwater grates? Earlier this year, the 800 block of South Percy Street, between Catherine and Christian, became Philly's first "Green Street," able to soak up water into subsoil for absorbing into the earth instead of the City's stormwater system.
The project was an early action example of Green City, Clean Waters, a Philadelphia Water Department initiative. The project is not as easy as repaving the street, however, as a porous substreet system is required. The City will consider installing porous streets in the coming years along with sewer and water construction projects, particularly on smaller alley and one-way streets.
