July Newsletter

Dear Friends & Neighbors,

Welcome to the middle of summer!!! Ok, maybe the middle of summer doesn't really deserve exclamation points, but we here at NNA are sure up to lots of exciting stuff. The 2nd annual Wine (& Sangria!) Tour and the Movies on the Block events were huge successes (thanks to all who helped make them happen!). We're petitioning the city to bring regular street sweeping to our neighborhood (Did you even know that the city has a fleet of street sweeping trucks? They do!). And, we're already starting to plan for our annual Beer Tour! So, take a scroll below for more about how to get involved, neighborhood happenings, and what NNA has been up to...

General Meeting Tuesday!

Back to its regularly scheduled day of the week, our monthly General Meeting at the Reed Street Presbyterian Apartments will take place tomorrow (Tuesday).  This is the perfect first step to getting more involved in the community!  Come hear what's going on in the neighborhood and bring any questions and concerns you might have.

NNA July General Meeting
Date: Tuesday, July 28th
Time: 6:30 p.m.
Location: Reed Street Presbyterian Apartments (16th and Reed)

Street Sweeping Initiative

Are you frustrated by the amount of trash on the street? Sick of the mountains of garbage collecting in the gutters and drains? Would you like to see regular street sweeping come to Newbold? Here's your chance to make it a reality! The Clean and Green Committee is looking for volunteers to help canvass the neighborhood to collect signatures in support of our street sweeping pilot initiative, which we plan to present to our councilman in the fall.

If you think you can lend a hand, email clean@newboldneighbors.org or, better yet, come out to our next meeting on Thursday, August 13 at 6:30 PM at Benna's West (Broad and Dickinson) to learn more!

Beer Tour 2015

It's that time of year again!  We are now looking for anyone interested in helping to organize or be a host for the 2015 Beer tour.  Email president@newboldneighbors.org to get in on the beery fun!

Upcoming Social Events

  • Save the date for the South Philly Sausage Fest on September 12th right here in our neighborhood!  Fun for the whole family will include:
    • Craft brews
    • Live music
    • Local vendors
  • Stay tuned for the next Night Out w/ NNA and lots of other events

Help Needed at Childs Elementary

We're putting out the call for volunteers to help maintain the Childs School garden and playground!  Anyone who's been by there recently knows that the garden and playground have seen some extra love in the past few months, but we need volunteers to help keep it looking its best.  So, if anyone has some extra time to water plants and pick up trash, please email the education committee: education@newboldneighbors.org

Notes from Public Safety Committee

1) While there has been a decrease in the number of robberies and thefts from persons in the neighborhood, the area has seen an increase in burglaries and thefts from autos, so please be extra careful to lock up your house and your car.

2) The Public Safety Committee's monthly walk will be held on August 4, at 7PM, weather pending. We will meet at 17th & Federal. Come meet neighbors, enjoy the summer evening and discover new and interesting parts of where you live, while using the city's 311 service to report safety and other issues along the way. We hope to see you there.

3) Unfortunately, there has been an uptick in violence, and particularly gun violence, over the last few months. On August 20th, the Police Service Area 3 meeting will take place for our area at 1327 S. 19th Street (Gospel Baptist Church). Come find out what is going on in the neighborhood, what the police are doing about it, and ask any questions you may have. This is also an excellent opportunity to report any issues you may have on your block, which helps provide the police with locations to keep an eye on. Make sure your voice is heard!

NNA June Newsletter

Please see our June newsletter below. Some of the information is outdated, but keep posted for our July newsletter coming soon!

Dear Friends & Neighbors,

Hope everyone had a great Father's Day! Did you know the summer solstice also occurred on Sunday to mark the official start to summer? While the pools are scheduled to open soon and lots of other cool stuff continues to happen, we all know that summer in Philly can kinda be a bit uneventful as people take off for the shore or other destinations. So, how do you beat the summer doldrums? Why not get involved with NNA and work for the betterment of the neighborhood? (Or at least come drink some wine and see some houses on our Wine & Sangria tour with us!)

Either way, keep scrolling for more about how to get involved, neighborhood happenings, and what NNA has been up to...

General Meeting Wednesday!

Our regular Tuesday meeting has been moved for this month only.  So, please join us Wednesday at the Reed Street Presbyterian Apartments for our monthly General Meeting.  As usual, our officers and committees will report about their activities this past month, plus we'll open the floor to any new business attendees may have.  All are welcome!  Come hear what's going on in the neighborhood and bring any questions and concerns you might have.

NNA June General Meeting

Cleaning and Greening

Our "meeting" this month was really just an excuse to say goodbye to longtime NNA member and former Clean & Green co-chair, Jesse Leonard.  If you don't know or haven't worked with Jesse, she's been instrumental in advancing the goals of NNA and the beautification of our community.  She's leaving some BIG shoes for us to fill!  (Good luck in NYC, Jesse!  Come back soon!)

However, here are some happenings and opportunities that may be of interest:

  • PHS Garden Trainings are FREE to anyone in Councilman Johnson's district. Call or email Peter at Peter.Elliot@Phila.gov or 215-686-3412 for a Council Sponsor coupon.
  • The PHS Pop Up Garden at 9th and Wharton is looking for volunteers. Anyone interested should check out www.pennhort.net/pop-up-volunteer.
  • The next district-wide clean up event sponsored by the Philadelphia More Beautiful Committee will be Saturday August 1st. Please contact us for more information on how to participate.

If you're interested in getting involved please email clean@newboldneighbors.org.  Ournext meeting will be July 9th at 6:30.

April Newsletter

Dear Friends and Neighbors,

Spring has officially arrived, and our neighborhood has positively been abuzz with activity!  The trees are blooming, people are dusting off their grills, and all of the sudden it seems like a good idea to just go sit on the stoop and take it all in.  What a good time to live in this little corner of South Philly!

In addition, NNA has been making huge strides for the improvement of our community: the Citywide Spring Cleanup was a veritable success, our Zoning team is helping neighbors guide more and more proposed development, and many neighbors found a postcard in their mailboxes recently, kindly inviting them to join us and help in our efforts!

Below, find more about how to get involved, neighborhood happenings, and what NNA has been up to...

Yesterday's General Meeting

Last night, we had one of the best, most diverse and active turn outs for our General Meeting EVER (nearly 30 people)! We even had two candidates for Common Pleas Judge seek us out to speak to attendees during New Business, we had a representative from the Committee of Seventy impart the importance of voting in this year's elections, and we had Committee report-outs that were positively PACKED with activities and updates about YOUR neighborhood. So while the world turns with grief, hope springs eternal in our little corner of Philadelphia.

Clean and Green

On Saturday, April 11, the neighborhood was hard at work as neighbors came together to sweep, clean, and spruce up their blocks. The Clean and Green Committee helped to sign up projects and provide supplies to many of the blocks that registered for the annual Citywide Spring Clean Up. The day was a huge success, with over 20 blocks registered and numerous community members pitching in to help make our neighborhood more beautiful.

Spring will continue to be a busy time for Clean and Green! Interested in helping us plant flowers or trees? Looking to have a tree planted in front of your home this November? Have an idea for a project that will help beautify the neighborhood? Email clean@newboldneighbors.org or, better yet, come out to our next meeting! We'll be at Benna's West (1444 S. Broad) at 6:30 PM on Thursday, May 14. Hope to see you there!

Public Safety

The Public Safety Committee has released the NNA Quarterly Crime Report, which you can find here. The report includes statistics that put crime into perspective by comparing trends over time and mapping all crimes that have occurred within our service area so far this year.  It's got tons of data, information, and graphics (like the one below), all designed to keep you informed.

For more information about the data, to request specific information, or to find out about the next Public Safety meeting, please contact Miguel Garces and Eddie Thrasher at publicsafety@newboldneighbors.org.

Education

The Education Committee is continuing to push forward and forge relationships with the schools in our areas, such as EM Stanton, GW Childs Elementary, and their affiliated organizations.  Want to get involved and support our local public schools?  Email our committee chairperson for the location of the next meeting on 5/20 @ 6PM: education@newboldneighbors.org

Planning & Zoning

Do you have opinions about what gets built or not built in our neighborhood?  Of course you do!  Come get your voice heard at our next Planning & Zoning meeting.  This committee is a leading voice for the changing landscape of our community and they want your involvement!

For more info, email our committee chairpersons:
zoning@newboldneighbors.org

Or just join us at our next meeting:  Tuesday 5/12, 6:30 PM @ Reed St. Presbyterian Apartments

Community Outreach

The outreach committee is starting to plan its annual Wine & Sangria Tour.  (Save the date - July 25th!)  If you would like to be a part of the planning committee or a host for the tour, please email MarilysMazzara@Newboldneighbors.org

Also, NNA is excited to be partnering with the Philadelphia Film Society to host a "Movies on the Block" event.  YOU help pick the subject, THEY pick the title, and then we convene as neighbors to watch a film about things that matter to this neighborhood that we love. Help us by clicking here and voting below on a subject!

Interested in strengthening relationships in the community?  Join the Community Outreach Committee for their next meeting Thursday 4/16 @ 7:30.  Email outreach@newboldneighbors.orgfor more info.
